Valley Seal to Block Vermin

Valley Seal or Gutter Mesh to Block Vermin & Keeping Unwanted Guests Out of Your Roof

There is nothing quite as unsettling as the scratching, rustling, or scurrying sounds of an animal in your roof cavity late at night. Beyond the mess and damage, these unwelcome guests, from possums and rats to birds and even snakes, can pose health risks and structural issues. Melbourne residents are all too familiar with the presence of possums and rats seeking shelter, particularly as Victorian weather changes.

While a high-quality gutter guard like Leafshield is your first line of defence for your main gutters, there is one critical, often-overlooked area where pests love to gain access; the roof valleys.

The Valley, A Vermin Highway

Roof valleys are the V-shaped channels where two sloping sections of your roof meet. They are designed to manage a high volume of water, but unfortunately, they can be a common entry point for persistent Australian vermin. Homeowners across Melbourne are always asking us about these entry points.

Many roof structures have gaps and small openings around the valley area where the tiles or sheets meet the main roof structure. For a curious possum or a determined rat, these gaps may be an open invitation to a safe, warm nesting area inside your roof. Once they are in the valley, it’s a short trip into your ceiling space where they can chew through wiring, contaminate insulation, and leave droppings.

What is Valley Seal?

A valley seal is a bitumen-impregnated foam, made of flexible membranes, and fitted under the edges of the valley iron or underneath roof tiles to close off any small gaps or vulnerabilities where water can enter the roof. Its primary purpose is to ensure that heavy rain is channeled efficiently off the roof without back-flowing or seeping into the roof cavity.

How Leafshield Seals the Deal for Melbourne Homes

At Leafshield, we understand that a complete protection system is essential, which is why a proper valley mesh protection, or alternatively a more simple storm seal is part of our installation options. (Storm Seal is another name for Valley Seal)

When installing our durable gutter protection mesh, we can also include options for any vulnerable valleys. See our main page about Valley Gutter Guards

We utilise the same robust, fire-rated mesh—like our Australian-made Premium Ember Mesh to create a fully sealed environment. The mesh is securely fitted across the valley, extending from one side of the roof to the other.

Storm Seal instead of Valley Gutter Guards

Nowadays new roofs are built without the ‘old school’ cement pointing in the valley, this is known as a ‘dry valley.’ In the roof construction process many roofers will neglect putting valley seals into the valley. When bird proofing roofs we frequently use our foam valley seal to provide peace of mind to homeowners that birds and other pests are prevented from entering.

Other uses for Valley Seal

-Valley seal is also used by skylight installers to seal around skylights

-Can be used on roof edges to fill up gaps that birds are using as entry points
